Most graduate students do tutoring, if their English is good enough, which provides some of your financial support.
ROUGH guide to tutor pay in 2012 (may increase each year)
For a standard ("1T") tutorship:
Workload = |
6 hours/week in tutorials + 6 hours/week preparation for 24 teaching weeks
+ 18 hours/year of consultation
+ 120 hours/year of marking per year
+ 21 hours/year of duties such as invigilating tests & exams, clerical work on exam marks, etc. |
Pay = |
R 27 810 / year |
To get money for tutoring, it is really best to arrive before the start of courses --- mid February --- or the start of second semester --- late July. Of course your English must also be good enough.
A half load is also possible. More than "1T" is too much work for most graduate students.
Students from abroad get student visas and these do allow a normal amount of tutoring for pay.

General:
- See UCT's Postgraduate Funding page
- Applying for Postgraduate Funding --- various application forms. Noticeboard shows current calls for applications.
- Postgraduate Financial Assistance Handbook (.pdf file --- requires Acrobat Reader) Contains long list of scholarships --- many are specific to the subject area, level of study, nationality, type of historical disadvantage (race, gender), or suffient academic performance.
South African Students:
- The NRF & DoL offer free-standing, prestigious, & equity disabled-people's bursaries that you can apply for, see the NRF's Scholarships & Fellowships page
- Your supervisor or her/his research group MAY have some "Grantholder-linked bursaries" from the NRF --- discuss this with your possible supervisor(s).
SADC Students:
- It is possible to get "Grantholder-linked" NRF bursaries, if they aren't all taken up by South Africans, but they only know this later in the year, so you need other money in case.
African Students:
Foreign Students:
- Minor scholarships from UCT can often be obtained - see above. Tutoring in the department brings in some money - see above. There may be scholarships offered by your government or international agencies.
- Unfortunately, foreign students rarely get NRF bursaries.
